Sony today announces their new flagship external flash unit for their Alpha DSLR lineup. The new HVL-F58AM features a new and innovative Quick Shift Bounce system.
Sony will begin shipping it in September. It is expected to price at $500.
There have been speculations that Nikon is on its way of introducing a new body into its Digital SLR lineup. We have seen the mentions of D3x, D10 and D700, which were all right in one direction - the new body is the second Full Frame (FX) body from Nikon that is cheaper than the existing D3.
A few days ago spy shots of D700 brochures started to circulate the net and it was reportedly leaked from China. It turns out to be true.
The new Nikon D700 is essentially a D300 body with a FX sensor. Don’t get too excited first, as they are not similarly priced.
Here are some of the confirmed specifications taken from kenrockwell.com:
Sensor: 12.1MP CMOS (the same as D3). 14-bit linear ADC, 16-bit data pipelines.
Resolution: 12.1MP in FX, 5MP in DX.
Format: FX and DX.
Frame Rate: 5FPS, up to 6.5FPS in cropped DX mode.
LCD size: 3inch.
Storage card: Single CF card slot.
Optional grip: MB-D10
Price? $3299.99. Which is almost 2x the price of a D300.
Will it be a 5D killer? We’ll see. Nikon will announce the D700 in August and will make it available in December.
The leaked brochure also mentions 4 new NIKKOR lenses.

Mozilla is also hoping to set a Guinness World Record for the most number of downloads on an application in a day, although such official title doesn’t exist yet.

With the crude oil price at its all time high, people would do whatever it takes to reduce the gas consumption. We have seen plenty of promises of water-powered cars before, but we have yet to one that you can actually walk into the showroom, put down some deposits and drive home.
It looks like the days of mass-produced water-powered cars is not far from now. Genepax of Japan has recently took the wrap off its Water Energy System fuel cell prototype. In a nutshell, this new fuel cell system uses water as a fuel and does not emit CO2.
Although the production cost is currently about ¥2,000,000 (US$18,522), it can be reduced to ¥500,000 or lower if Genepax succeeds in mass production. The company believes that its fuel cell system can compete with residential solar cell systems if the cost can be reduced to this level.

Viewzi.com hosts a very nicely done flash app that makes search fun. It comes with several ways of displaying the search results (conveniently called “views”). I let you explore the fun with the same keyword - Paris Hilton below.
